The House of Windsor was created when George V changed the name of Britain’s Royal House from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in 1917. The change took place as a result of anti-German sentiment during WWI, and the Royal Family’s desire to distance itself from its German heritage. Monarchs of the Royal House of Windsor have, therefore, reigned over Great Britain and the Commonwealth for over a century!
Although no Australian coins were issued for King Edward VIII, who abdicated less than a year after accession, Australian coinage has been issued for all four of the other Windsor monarchs – King George V, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II (Britain’s longest reigning monarch) and King Charles III. A unique Australian tribute to the House of Windsor, and an historic overview of Australian numismatic history, this set comprises a coin for all four!
