Continuing on from the Dragon Phoenix release in 2017, the 2023 release in the Chinese Myths and Legends series features a dragon and Koi

In Chinese mythology, the dragon is a divine creature and an auspicious symbol of power, strength, wealth, and good fortune. Throughout East Asia and beyond, koi are synonymous with harmony and happiness, and are also said to be lucky omens for marriage and fertility.

The coin’s reverse portrays coloured representations of a Chinese dragon and a koi. As China’s national colour, red is the most auspicious hue for a dragon; the gold koi is believed to attract prosperity and luck. Eyed by both creatures, the flame-ringed pearl is the ancient embodiment of wisdom. Also included in the design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, as well as a ‘moon bridge’ – its high arch and reflection on the water creating the shape of the lunar body often associated with purity or perfection.

The coin bears The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Obverse, featuring the Jody Clark effigy supplemented with the dates of Her Majesty’s reign. Also on the obverse is the coin’s weight, purity, monetary denomination, and year-date.
